Most cats are pretty self-sufficient. It is a part of why we love them. But, for the most part, our pets can’t fend for themselves if we go away for a weekend. Some of us have significant others, or parents, that are familiar with our animals and are available for all our pet sitting needs. However, there are some tips that may be helpful for new pet sitters, or pet sitters who are just new to you.
Cat Sitting
basics for Cat Sitting
Of course, the basics come first. Cat sitters might not be cat
owners. Also, every cat and owner team is different. The first
detail to decide is where the cat(s) will stay. Our furry
friends can be extremely particular and get upset when their
world is suddenly different. On the other hand, you might not
want to give the keys to your house over to someone. Where your
cat(s) stay will have to be suited for all parties involved,
even those parties in fur coats. Some of the basics (that differ
based on pets/owners) include:
Food (where, how often, how much)
Where the toys/nail clippers/treats/emergency numbers are
Any special needs (pills/no treats/no “people food”/etc.)
How often you want the water changed
How often you want the litter scooped
The owner factor when cat sitting
Every pet owner is unique. There are some steps you can take to
make the situation smoother for you and for your sitter. Aside
from asking what experience your sitter has, you may give
him/her a head’s up as to how often you want updates. You
probably won’t need a three page email that details every single
breath while you’re gone. But, once in a while, it’s nice to
hear everything is okay at home. How often depends on the
owner’s personality, as well as the length of their absence.
Then there the facts only you could know. Each animal has a
personality all their own. This is, unanimously, the most
important topic of discussion to have with someone who isn’t
used to spending every minute with your cat.
Temperaments
Is your cat an affection junkie? Do they need someone to play
with them so they don’t destroy the house? Molly G. says about
her pets: “My kitties are so self-sufficient, and tend to hide
from anyone they don't know, that a cat sitter would pretty much
be feeding, watering, and litter-cleaning for them without
necessarily seeing them.” Yet, she watched a pair of cats
recently who were gluttons for human attention. It’s important
for your sitter to know their “normal” behavior. Changes in
their personalities can be a sign that something is wrong, or
that they miss their owners.
As much as we adore our feline friends, some of them have bad habits. Tell your cat sitter if your cat does any of the following.
Bites
Scratches
Destroys paper products
Chews wires
Is prone to hairballs or diarrhea
Steals food/drink left unattended
If you prepare your pet sitter for what might happen, you are much less likely to receive a panicked phone call when your beloved Fluffy destroys the sitter’s 12-page term paper. The best way to explain your cat’s quirks is through anecdotes. If it’s possible, arrange for the cat to meet your potential sitter.
In the end
These are just some suggestions to ensure your peace of mind
when you’re away from home. While most of us have someone we
trust our furry children with, it’s always good to have a few
options. Despite the cat’s natural independent nature, there is
more to caring for them than just food, water, and poop
scooping.
